18-year-old to appear in court following deaths of four children in fire

Jamaica Observer / KINGSTON, Jamaica — The 18-year-old woman who was arrested following the deaths of four  children and the injury of one other child in a fire at Booby Drive in Cockburn Pen, St Andrew is to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court tomorrow. The woman, Sanoya Clarke, was charged with the offence of Cruelty to Child in relation to the injury of two of the children. One-year-old twins—Juvaughne and Jivaughne Bennett—and three-year-old Krisante Maxwell, died in the fire that destroyed their home on Saturday, January 27. Three-year-old Tadieke Bennett later died at hospital while being treated.  A fifth child was treated and released. The Jamaica Observer, on the day of the fire, was told that the children were left in the care of Clarke, whose room did not have electricity, so she decided to light a candle. Clarke, who is the twin boys’ sister and mother of Krisante, was left in care of the children because her mother, Tisha Walters, 39, was at work. “She [Tisha] didn’t get home until the place was totally engulfed and realised that she actually lost her kids. Her 18-year-old daughter was staying with them,” said Lambert Walters, a relative of the family. Detectives are awaiting a ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine if additional charges will be laid.
