Trinidad Express / A member of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard was arrested for the robbery and shooting of a San Fernando mason during a “J’ouvert” party on Sunday.
The suspect, a 28 year old man of Pranz Gardens, Claxton Bay, was allegedly held with a Heckler and Koch pistol loaded with 28 rounds of nine millimetre ammunition.
The victim, Hakeem Saunders, 21, of San Fernando, was robbed of a gold chain as the thief shot him in his hip, police said. Saunders was treated and discharged from hospital. A police report stated that at around 6.30 a.m. Saunders reported that he was at Bae J’ouvert at Skinner Park when he felt a blow to the left side of his face.
He said the assailant grabbed the chain off his neck and then he heard an explosion. Moments later he realised he had sustained a gunshot wound. The suspect fled. Saunders was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was interviewed by police officers. At around 7.30 a.m. officers on duty at the party observed the suspect.
Police heard an explosion and the suspect ran through the crowd. WPC Huggins-Daniel attempted to apprehend the suspect and he allegedly dealt her a blow to her face, damaging her spectacles.
The suspect jumped over a fence and escaped. He was apprehended a short distance away. The suspect was expected to be slapped with several charges including possession of a firearm and ammunition, shooting with intent,
