Trinidad Express / A Rio Claro grandmother was yesterday brought to court charged with larceny and fraud amounting to $153,000. She allegedly fleeced five people pretending to be able to secure HDC homes for them.

Soomaria Mahabal, 59, was arrested last Friday and charged on Saturday by fraud squad officers David Cummings and Aaron Ramdial. She was represented by attorney Deedra-Lee Murray who held for Subash Panday. Mahabal, a mother of four children appeared before acting deputy chief magistrate Nannette Forde-John in the San Fernando First Magistrates’ Court.

The matter was transferred to Rio Claro Magistrates’ Court where she is expected to answer the charges that she took money from five different people purporting to he able to assist them to secure Housing Development Corporation (HDC) homes. The offences allegedly took place between June and August 2015.

It was alleged between the period, Mahabal received from Mark Borneo, Gailann Pillia, Geeta Balaram, Gura Ramsampat and Sita Jagdeo a quantity of cash. She was not called on to enter a plea and the matter. Mahabal was remanded in prison custody and the case transferred to the Rio Claro Magistrates’ Court. It will be called again on Tuesday.
