Trinidad Express / TRINIDAD and Tobago’s players must defeat Curacao in El Salvador today to have any chance of reaching the quarterfinals of the North/Central America and the Caribbean pre-qualifying tournament for the Junior Davis Cup. This country’s under-16 male tennis players were on a bye yesterday after going down 3-0 against hosts El Salvador after press time on Monday night. The defeat makes it virtually impossible to top Group B and book a place in the quarterfinals, but there is still an outside chance of getting into the last eight as one of the best two second-placed teams. El Salvador was just one match away from winning the group and reaching today’s quarters at press time last night as they were deadlocked with Curacao at 1-1 after the singles. This country’s girls are virtually out of contention for a place in the quarters of the Junior Fed Cup competition. After going down 2-1 against Curacao when the tournament served off on Monday, they lost both singles against Jamaica and were hoping to make the final score respectable with a victory in doubles after press time last night. Jade Tom Yew lost the opening match 7-5, 6-2 and then national under-16 champ Yin Lee Assang went down 6-0, 6-4 in the battle of No.1 players. T&T are expected to finish at the bottom of Group B as they will be up against group favourites Puerto Rico when the round-robin stage ends today. The Puerto Ricans crushed Curacao 3-0 yesterday after a 2-1 victory over Jamaica the day before. In this country’s Davis Cup fixture against El Salvador on Monday, Aidan Carter and Adam Ramkissoon just failed to win a point when they were edged 6-4, 5-7, 10/6 in the doubles. Ramkissoon lost the opening match 6-2, 7-5 and then national under-14 and 16 champ Carter went down 6-3, 6-2. This competition will conclude on Saturday and only the champion country in both events will advance to compete alongside Canada, Mexico and United States in the next couple months in the qualifying tournament. The top two male and female finishers for this round-robin competition will advance to the top 16 in the world. The main draw will take place in the middle of September and will be staged in Hungary for the second straight year.
