The trinidad Guardian / T&T’s under 17 girls football team play Nicaragua today in the first of two warm-up matches in Managua, Nicaragua.

The young Lady Warriors travelled to Nicaragua yesterday as part of preparations for the Caribbean Football Union Under 17 Girls Tournament to be held in Haiti from 16-22 October.

The first three teams qualify for the Concacaf Championship in April 2018.

Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz is very eager for the matches today and Wednesday against the Nicaragua under 17 girls.

“These two matches will give us an indication of where we are, against Central American opponents who traditionally has been a level above us in this age group.” said Shabazz.

The head coach also noted that competition within his squad has helped to intensify preparations following his team’s last competitive outing in August. He said, “After advancing in August the players have trained well and we want to see how much they have taken on board individually and as a group. They are competing against each other in training but the real test in football is playing in an international match,” he added.

Making up the squad of 24 players are five foreign based players in skipper Kara Trotman, Nia Rampersad, Annika Daniel, Isabella Collins and Sarah DeGannes.

The U17 Girls lost a warm-up match 4-1 against a combined Senior /U20 Women’s National team prior to their departure but skipper Trotman, who is the daughter of former national youth player Kirk Trotman, was still upbeat in stating: “The ladies have been working hard and getting to play international warm up matches is a tremendous opportunity for us and the program. These are very exciting times and there is a buzz in the team as we strive to learn the things needed to compete at this level.”
