St James High blanked Garvey Maceo High 3-0 in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta quarter-final round match at
St Elizabeth Technical High yesterday, but coach Theodore Whitmore was far from impressed.
Whitmore, however, told The Gleaner the result is what counts and he was happy that they managed to keep another clean sheet in quarterfinal group.
“Again, the performance wasn’t what we were looking for, but at the end of the day, the result is what matters. We came away with three goals,” said Whitmore.
“The boys are not accustomed to playing in these conditions (the sun and the wind). We knew it would be an uphill task for the first 45 minutes, but we stuck to the task and got a goal in the half, and in the second half, we went and killed off the Garvey Maceo team,” he added.
STEPPED ON THEACCELERATOR St James High, who started poorly, found their footing in, after a 38th-minute goal from Jowell Powell sent them in the lead. They stepped on the accelerator in the second half with substitute Ackeem Smith making it 2-0 in the 78th minute before Powell added his second three minutes later to seal the issue.
In the second match of the double-header, Clarendon College took their revenge for last year’s defeat, easing past Spot Valley High 4-0.
Technical director Lenny Hyde said it was a good performance from his team. He, however, said they got the chances to score more than the four goals they got.
“It was a good, spirited performance, where we controlled the game, but I think we should have scored more goals. The most important thing is that we kept a clean sheet, our defence was disciplined, so I think we had a good overall game,” said Hyde.
After many wasted chances, Clarendon College finally opened their account in the 38th minute off the right boot of Nicque Daley before Lamar Walker gave them a
2-0 lead on the stroke of half time. Spot Valley’s hopes were further diminished when Daley was again on the scoresheet in the 63rd minute, before Walker also got his second goal of the game in the 74th to complete the scoring.
