Jamaica Gleaner / Jamaica continues to grapple with a spiralling murder rate even as the government struggles to devise strategies to arrest crime.
The latest police statistics show that nearly 80 murders have been recorded over the past 19 days.
According to the figures, 77 persons were murdered between October 1 and 18, continuing a bloody trend since the start of the year.
For the past five months, the island has averaged 150 murders per month, with the deadliest month being August with 167 killings.
The Kingston Western Police Division which covers Denham Town, has so far recorded 77 murders for the year.
Denham Town was designated a Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) on Tuesday.
The western parish of St James has recorded 239 murders followed by Clarendon with 131, Westmoreland at 121 and St Andrew South with 129.
