Jamaica Gleaner / Minister of Education, Senator Ruel Reid, has condemned yesterday morning’s gun attack at the Thompson Town High School in Clarendon in which 39-year-old watchman, Alrick Carthy of Springfield in Thompson Town, was fatally shot. Another watchman was also injured and is now in hospital in critical condition.

Reid has extended condolences to the Carthy family and the school community, while appealing for calm while the police conduct investigations.

According to reports, at about 1:30 a.m., armed men entered the school premises and confronted the watchmen who were on duty at the property. The gunmen opened fire on the men.

Carthy was the father of three children, two of whom attend the institution. Staff described him and his injured colleague as diligent employees who were very committed to their job and the safety of their co-workers.

A trauma team from the education ministry visited the school yesterday morning. Grief sessions were also held with staff and students.
