RJR News / The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has sought to explain its decision to increase the fare for its premium specialty service, effective January 1.
A statement on Sunday night from the State-run bus company said the fare adjustment became necessary as a result of high operational costs which it is no longer able to absorb.
It explained that the increase will vary for each route.
According to the JUTC, it was faced with the option of discontinuing the service or increasing fares to making it viable.
The JUTC says it took into consideration the economic challenges some commuters may be facing and ensured that the service is still affordable.
The last fare increase for the JUTC’S premium specialty service was nearly two years ago.
The service is provided on 26 routes in Kingston, St. Catherine and Clarendon.
The bus company stressed that the fares for its regular service will not be increased at this time.
