RJR News / Jamaica has been elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).

The elections took place on Wednesday during the 39th General Conference of  Unesco now underway in Paris, France.

The 58-member Executive Board focuses on the development of policies and programmes to direct Unesco’s activities.

Jamaica’s membership of the Executive Board is for the period 2017 to 2021.

Unesco is a specialized agency of the United Nations.

Its declared purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through educational, scientific, and cultural reforms  along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the United Nations Charter.
