Jamaica Gleaner / The operator of the Kingston Freeport Terminal (KFTL) says it may have to petition the government to have sections of the Customs and Wharfage Acts reviewed to increase the penalties for importers who do not clear cargo from the port in a timely manner.

Yard manager for KFTL, Ian Telfer, says the port operator is having a challenge with importers clearing their cargo on time.

Telfer says there is now a pile-up of containers on the port, with about 30 per cent of the over 1,200 containers sitting for as long as three months.

He says the company will have no choice but to seek to have the laws changed if importers do not respond to an appeal to clear their cargo.
