Trinidad Express / Disabled Kayla Phillip, daughter of murder victim Ornella Phillip, is in need of a specialised wheelchair.   Her aunt, Nikita Phillip, said she wanted to purchase the wheelchair for her niece as a birthday present last week. But she could not afford the $20,000-plus price tag. “Kayla is outgrowing her wheelchair. It is not an ordinary wheelchair because she cannot sit straight up. It is costing us more than $20,000,” she said. Kayla, who was born with cerebral palsy, celebrated her ninth birthday last week. Phillip said she planned a Doc Mc Stuffin birthday party, invited her friends and cooked her favourite dishes. But the little girl was not happy. “Kayla’s birthday was on 6th November and even though we had a party for her, she was a bit dazed at times because she misses her mum. There are still nights where she gets up crying for her mother and wants to talk about her and what happened to her. We are just trying to make life the most comfortable and “normal” for Kayla. It is challenging at times but we do the best with what we have and what we can do,” her aunt said. The girl’s 28-year-old mother was found dead in their Gasparillo apartment in July. She was shot once in the chest, an autopsy found. Phillip was 22 weeks pregnant.   NOTE: If you can help this children, please contact this reporter at [email protected]
