Jamaica Gleaner / The president of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), Peter Townsend, is blaming the growing extortion problem in sections of the country on the lack of political will.
In a release yesterday, Townsend contended that many of the gangs who carry out extortion are affiliated with political parties.
He further alleges that the police, too, are complicit with many of these gangs who are perpetrators of extortion.
As a result, the NDM leader says there is no real effort to eradicate the problem.
Townsend says extortion in Spanish Town, St Catherine is not new, yet the problem persists.
He questioned whether the prime minister would be willing to declare a zone of special operations in Spanish Town to return law and order to the St Catherine capital.
