RJR News / South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk will miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games after suffering a knee ligament injury during a celebrity touch rugby game. Van Niekerk, the 400 metre world and Olympic champion, was planning on competing in the 100 and 200 metres in Australia. However, he requires surgery after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the match in Cape Town. The 25 year old says he will take his time to ensure full recovery. Van Niekerk successfully defended his 400 meter world title at this summer’s London World Championships and took silver in the 200 metres. Next year’s Commonwealth Games take place on Australia’s Gold Coast between from April 4-15.
