The trinidad Guardian / I find it difficult to believe in our politicians as they seem to forget the philosophies which they espoused a few years ago. In 2014, the then-prime minister, speaking on the recommendations of the Constitution Commission which she had set up, declared:
“It is therefore proposed that the life of a Parliament should ordinarily be fixed at five years. This will effectively fix the date for the holding of general elections. Gone would be the days of silly boasts and taunts about leaders ‘having the date in their back pocket.’ ” (Trinidad Guardian, August 5, 2014)
If such a proposal was really the intention, then it nullifies the argument that “If the Prime Minister could call an election at any time, why can’t the political leader?”
It is contradictory utterances like these which reflect the integrity and moral nature of our politicians.
