Jamaica Gleaner / The Minister of National Security Robert Montague says plans are far advance to upgrade the close circuit television (CCTV) system in Montego Bay, St James.

The western Jamaica parish, which is home to some of the top resorts in the Caribbean, has seen a dramatic increase in murders over the last two years.

In 2016 a record 265 persons were killed in St James.

However, this was erased last year when 335 murders were reported across the parish, prompting calls from local stakeholders for urgent action by the government.

In a statement yesterday, Montague said additional CCTV cameras have already been ordered to boost security in St James and other western parishes.

He says the project, which is part of his JamaicaEye initiative, seeks to incorporate the use of technology to help deter criminals, thereby reducing incidents of crime in western parishes.
