RJR News / Forty-one million dollars. That’s how much the Electoral Office of Jamaica needs, to arrange the March 5 by-elections in the St. Andrew North Western constituency and the Norman Gardens division of the Kingston & St. Andrew Municipal Corporation. Director of Elections Orrette Fisher submitted the budget to the Ministry of Finance on Monday, with $27 million to be spent on the St. Andrew North West election and $14 million in Norman Gardens. With preparations underway for the nomination of the candidates and the holding of the by-elections, the Electoral Office has decided to use the electronic voter identification system in the March 5 polls. With being specific, Mr. Fisher told RJR News that he had some concerns about “some of the statutory requirements that should have been carried out” in relation to the Norman Gardens election. He said he had been in contact with “the relevant persons” to point out these “shortcomings”. The process of identifying and training election day workers has also started.
