Jamaica Observer / A large field of 14 runners will contest the Ash Wednesday Trophy – an Overnight Allowance event for three-year olds and upward going six and a half furlongs (1300m). The race is a rather knotty affair, with many of the 14 entered possessing the qualities to come out victorious and bring home the trophy.
The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at the runners in post position order as they vie for the $1-million purse money.
LOTTERY TICKET (5-y-o b.m. Seeking The Glory – Just A Flutter ) – Has done well of late, but was disappointing on last when finishing in fifth position behind Orpheus over seven furlongs. Prior to that run, Lottery Ticket finished second over tomorrow’s distance, which suggests that she is capable enough to figure here. Lottery Ticket has, however, displayed a tendency to run far off the pace, and the number one draw will make a winning effort very difficult. She will be coming late, but it depends on how far behind the leaders she finds herself.
TWILIGHT DREAMS (4-y-o. ch.c. Twilight Time – Seaofdreams ) – Coming off back-to-back wins, so he’s quite fit. Those wins were in Restricted Allowance company, however, so now that he is coming up to the highly competitive Overnight Allowance level, a hat-trick seems unlikely. Twilight Dreams will have to catch the pace of this class before winning here. Nevertheless, the fact that trainer Carl Anderson has called Dick Cardenas to ride him might be significant.
PRINCESS EMANUELLE (5-y-o ch.m. Traditional Peak – Explosive Peak ) – Ran third on February 3 over the five straight. Princess Emanuelle was up with the pace before weakening a bit. Now going longer, Princess Emanuelle, with that run under her belt, is expected to be right there with the pacesetters and still have enough to be a factor at the end. Rounding into form and should not be left out of calculations.
BIRDIE MY LOVE (5-y-o ch.m. Burning Marque – Bye Bye Birdie ) – Hasn’t raced in a while and will use this race to get back into her top form.
DILIGENT (5-y-o gr.g. Fearless Vision – Bachelor of Arts ) – Even with the blinkers off and the tongue tie on, Diligent will be hard-pressed to win this one.
NOTHINGBUTTHEBEST (6-y-o ch.m. Blue Pepsi Lodge – All The Best ) – Will have to come up with more than her best here.
PROLIFIC PRINCESS (6-y-o ch.m Legal Process – Nuttin But Red ) Good horse who is slowly but surely finding her best form. Prolific Princess was just behind Orpheus on January 27 in a seven-furlong event, and with this race just a half-a-furlong shorter, she will still be quite at home. Prolific Princess is a fighter, and with the leading rider Anthony Thomas on board for new trainer Junior Small, the connections are smelling victory. She is light and will sit off the pace before striking in the straight. Prolific Princess is going to be hard to beat.
SUPERTRONICS (6-y-o ch.g. Seeking The Glory – Super Lass ) – Last raced in high claiming and should have stayed within that rank. Will be left behind in this one.
ANOTHER BULLET (6-y-o. b.h Nasheet – Wisely Noted ) – Running under par in his recent races after impressing in the early part of last year. Another Bullet was disqualified at the gates because of an injury on December 30, 2017, and is now well rested for this. If he decides to run like the Another Bullet of old, he is not without a chance in this one, plus his trainer Patrick Lynch has been in really good nick.
GOLDEN BULLET (7-y-o. b.h. Western Classic – Wap ) – Last raced in a $350,000 claiming race, and truth be told, has no business here.
WARTIME (5-y.o ch.m War Marshall – Time Crisis ) – Quietly trying to deal with the reality of this class with her last effort when finishing seven lengths behind Orpheus – an indication of movement in the right direction. Wartime still has more to learn and will do so tomorrow.
GARY GLITTER (5-y-o b.g Deputy Glitters – True Virtue ) – Has dropped down several notches in recent times and has not won a race in his last 10 starts. Gary Glitter is essentially a run-on sprinter who might find seven furlongs a bit too much, but has kept much better company in the past, and any resurgence of that form will see him fighting this one out. Despite not winning in such a long time, Gary Glitter has been about in his races, and the same will occur tomorrow.
PHINEAS (9-y-o br.g Distorted – Winning Spirit ) – Getting on in years, and retirement might well be near.
RAS EMANUEL (6.b.h Burning Marque – Pleasant Princess ) – Ran well over the five straight (1,000m) on last (February 3, 2018), after having not raced for over three months. Ras Emanuel will benefit from that run, and going longer will surely have a say in this one.
