Jamaica Observer / URIEL James, alias Rooksie, the reputed area leader of Rose Town — one of Kingston’s toughest communities — was shot and injured by gunmen in an early morning attack yesterday. Police said James was about to enter the Spartan Gym compound Lady Musgrave Road in St Andrew when two armed men approached his Honda motor car and fired several shots, hitting James in the lower back.
Security personnel from King Alarm security company who were in the vicinity apprehended the gunmen and handed them over to the police. Two guns retrieved from the scene were handed over to the police.
James was taken to hospital for treatment but police said his condition was not critical.
Assistant Superintendent Dahlia Garrick, head of the constabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit, told the Jamaica Observer that James was not on the constabulary’s wanted list, but he had a number of cases in the police system.
Police said no motive had been established for the shooting.
In the meantime, Rohan Marshall, who was once said to be a member of the Andem Gang, was shot dead about 10:00 yesterday morning in Swallowfield, St Andrew.
Marshall was implicated in the murder of gas station operator Sylvia Edwards on Hagley Park Road in Kingston and was subsequently convicted but was released from prison following an appeal.
