Jamaica Observer / Kingston and St Andrew Reds defeated St Catherine Blues 36-34 in Game One of the annual Parish of Residence Rugby Series Two match at Barbican Football Field last Saturday. The annual two-match series, which is in its fourth instalment, helps to select the best 25 players in the country who will represent the semi-professional Hurricanes Rugby League squad for 2018, and also serves as a trial for selection to the national team.

For Kingston, Renaldo Wade and Kenneth Walker scored two tries apiece, while Tyronie Rowe, Andrew Simpson and Donovan Jackson scored one each. St Catherine’s tries came from Antonio Baker, Sheldon Kelly, Khamisi McKain and Mickel Facey (two).

Director of Rugby Romeo Monteith was satisfied with the showing from both teams.

“Kingston got out of the blocks early and built a 36-6 point lead. We all thought it was over, but the heart that St Catherine showed to peg back the score in the final 20 was amazing. Game Two will be a great spectacle on May 26 (today),” he said.

In the Junior Parish Academy games, St Catherine Under-14s pipped Kingston 20-16. In the Under-16s, St Catherine 12 defeated Kingston 8, while in Under-19 competition, St Catherine powered by Kingston 14-2.

The series will be decided today at Barbican Football Field, when all teams clash for the second and final time. junior games begin at 1:00 pm and the senior game begins at 4:00 pm.
