The Trinidad Guardian / The rain gods punished Sri Lanka yesterday, as the team was left ruing the two hours it refused to come out and play on day three (Saturday) of the second Test at the Darren Sammy Cricket ground as time ran out during its victory chase on the final day, in its attempt to level the three-match series 1-1.

When stumps were drawn, Windies maintained a 1-0 series lead.

The teams head to Barbados for the final Test which starts on Saturday and Windies are in a position where they cannot lose the series. Set a winning target of 296 runs off 93 possible overs Windies lost wickets regularly and limped to a draw as bad light cut play short.

The Sri Lankans had protested over the change of ball by the umpires on the third day and failed to come out to play until lunch. Yesterday, they could have done with the lost time, as they had the Windies reeling at eight for two wickets early in their reply.

Pacer Kasun Rajitha bowled a brilliant opening spell to send back Devon Smith (1) and Kieran Powell (2). Shai Hope came in to join the obdurate Kraigg Brathwaite and had to go off the field for treatment with the score at 22. He returned when the Sri Lankans dished up Roston Chase (13) at 55 and Shane Dowrich (8) with 64 on the board.

It looked as the Windies innings was nearing its end but the right-hander came back to join Brathwaite and they batted well in taking the score past the 100-run mark. Brathwaite showed a broad bat to the fast deliveries sent down by the Lankan pacers and used his feet and reach to play the spinners.

Sri Lanka came to life with the score at 117 with still 35 overs to go, the visitors were able to rip out Hope for 39. He faced 115 balls, hitting four fours and a six. Skipper Holder so many times the saviour for the Windies with the bat was up next and saw Brathwaite bring up his fifty off 159 balls with six fours.

The two carried the score along to 137 for five, when the heavens opened and drove the players off. They came back around 4.50 pm to bat and moved along to 147 for the same five wickets when the umpires offered the batsmen light and they accepted and walked off. The Sri Lankans stood out in the field refusing to come off and after a while, they trudged off dejectedly.

When play was finally called at 5.45 pm, Brathwaite was unbeaten on 59 off 172 balls with six fours and Holder 15 off 20 balls with two fours.

Earlier, Shannon Gabriel created history by grabbing the best ever Test figures by a West Indian bowler in the Caribbean. Starting the day with 6/48 and Sri Lanka on 334/8, then he needed only 10 balls to finish off the opposition for 342.

He removed both overnight batsmen in Akeila Dhananjaya 23 and Suranga Lakmal seven as he finished with his Test best off 8/62.

This added to his first innings 5/59, gave him the best ever match figures by a West Indian in the Caribbean. His final tally read 13 for 121, the third best overall performance by a West Indian. Still ahead of him are Michael Holding 14 for 149 against England at the Oval 1976 and Courtney Walsh recorded 13 for 55 against New Zealand at Wellington in 1995.

The bandwagon now shifts to Barbados where the first day/night Test to be ever played in the Caribbean starts on Saturday.
