A councillor at 23-years-old

Trinidad Express / AT 23-years-old Chris Hosein, has become one of the the youngest United National Congress (UNC) candidate to have won an electoral district at this year’s local government elections.

Hosein won the Reform/Manahambre district with 2,085, beating Peoples National Movement candidate Terry Garib who received  966.

He said: “This whole experience has been truly humbling. During campaigning I noticed that the district lacked representation and I believe I am someone who will represent the people.” He said the district has not been represented since the death of the councillor Ramesh Karpan last year.

Hosein is a political science student and attends the University of the West Indies. He is also the chairman of the UNC’s Youth Arm and the nephew of former San Fernando City Corporation councillor for Les Efforts West/La Romaine Jankie Ragunanan.

Hosein said he was first drawn into politics through his uncle.

“I would visit him at the office and it grew on me. Politics became my passion,” he said.

Hosein said that during the screening process, he was one of five people going up for the electoral district.

“The screening committee saw that I would be right for the position and I made it through. The older politicians said that they will guide me through and Mrs Persad-Bissessar is a pillar of strength to the people. She has been very supportive of the youths and has given us the chance. We are being moulded by people who have a great wealth of experience and knowledge,” said Hosein.

He said that he intends to address the issues of drainage, road works and developing the community when he goes into office.

Hosein also has an active interest in supporting the community through his non-governmental organisation, Project Reach”. He said that the aim of the ngo is to assist the less fortunate and last year held a successful toy drive where he distributed items to many children in the area.
