A magnificent run – Maneater gobbles them up in Diamond Mile

Jamaica Gleaner / SHE’S A MANEATER yesterday demolished her 14 rivals, BIGDADDYKOOL et al , to romp the $14.2 million Supreme Ventures Limited Diamond Mile by an astonishing six and a half lengths in near stakes-record time.

However, the Triple Crown and Superstakes winner almost stopped her backers’ hearts, appearing to be bogged down along the rail in ninth position with Dane Nelson for the first half mile.

Faced with a wall of horses, led by SIR BUDGET, TALENTED TONY K, MONEY MAGNET, WILL IN CHARGE, and CHACE THE GREAT, Nelson asked his first question of the filly three furlongs out – then came the explosion from the 1-2 favourite.

SHE’S A MANEATER made a sweeping move to go after the leaders, caught them coming off the home turn, and ran right away, leaving the two-furlong pole.

“I was feeling her,” Nelson said after the event, confidently stating that he was never worried by the seemingly difficult position the filly had found herself in.

“They were going too fast, so I knew they would come back,” he added.

BIGDADDYKOOL, the Superstakes runner-up, never knew what hit him, unable to go the early pace, coming home late to snatch second position from stablemate HOUDINI’S MAGIC by a neck.

SHE’S A MANEATER’s victory, timed in 1:36.4, fell two-fifths of a second short of her stablemate SEEKING MY DREAM’s stakes record 1:36.2, clocked in back-to-back Diamond Mile races.

DaCosta was ecstatic after a third straight win in the event, which allowed him to extend his lead in the trainers’ championship to $6 million over BIGDADDYKOOL’s Anthony Nunes.

“It’s an achievement I never thought would have happened,” the 16-time champion said, reflecting on his domination of the Diamond Mile.

Nunes, who started the day $2.1 million in stakes behind DaCosta, saddled two winners, outgunned 4-2 by the champion trainer, who was also victorious with MY WAY, LOOSE CANNON, and WINTER IS COMING on the 14-race card.

DOWN TO THE WIRE

However, the title race could still go down to the wire with Nunes’s unbeaten PATRIARCH the hot favourite for the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes and BIGDADDYKOOL expected to line-up in the Miracle Man Trophy, formerly the Harry Jackson Memorial, both on Boxing Day, eyeing approximately $4.2 million in stakes.

Nelson was the day’s top rider, opening his account with 4-5 favourite SCOOP JORDYNE in the fourth event before landing the 10th, 12th, and 13th races with DaCosta’s LOOSE CANNON, WINTER IS COMING and SHE’S A MANEATER, respectively.

Winston Kong, SHE’S A MANEATER’s owner, has temporarily overtaken BIGDADDYKOOL’s Stephan Narinesingh in the owners’ championship by approximately $1 million.

However, unlike Kong, the Trinidadian has numbers on his side with horses racing across all grades and among the claiming ranks, making him favourite to retain his title with six race meets remaining.
