A tribute to a local jazz icon*


Trinidad Express / The year was 2006 and it was a particularly hot January morning in Bridgetown, Barbados. A contingent of Trinidadian journalists had landed on the island, the night before, for the week-long Barbados Jazz Festival, and having renewed acquaintances with regional colleagues, earlier that morning, journeyed together to the island’s capital for lunch. Faced with a line of restaurants along the city’s waterfront, a debate started over which should be patronised. The live opening notes of a jazzed up rendition of Kitchener’s “Tay Lay Lay” stopped the conversation mid-sentence. Before another word could be spoken a smooth hum and vocal scat run swept aside the hot humid air like a cool familiar breeze.
