A Universal Beauty*

Trinidad Express / Today marks 40 years since Trinidad and Tobago’s very own Janelle “Penny” Commissiong was crowned Miss Universe 1977 on July 16 of that year, at the National Theater in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Commissiong was also voted Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality four days before her crowning. During her reign, Commissiong was an advocate for black rights and world peace. She was awarded the Trinity Cross, the nation’s highest award at that time, in 1977. Three postage stamps were also issued in her honour. A BWIA (Caribbean Airlines now) aircraft was also named after her that same year. Here is a look back at Penny’s crowning achievement.
