Bring them to justice

Trinidad Express / PRIME Minister Dr Keith Rowley has condemned the shooting of local government independent candidate for La Brea, Victor Roberts and is calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Speaking shortly after casting his ballot at the International School in Westmoorings this morning, Rowley said that violence during the elections period was very disturbing as no-one expected the campaigning to go beyond verbal confrontations.

He said the attack was a serious issue and needed to be dealt with by the authorities.

On Saturday, Roberts was shot while standing on the tray of a pickup van around 5:50p.m. He was canvassing along the Ramdass Road, Palo Seco.

Rowley said the voting process was smooth at the polling station.

He said he has had no reports of unlawful canvassing for votes on election day, and that if there were any, this should be dealt with by the authorities.

Rowley also addresses comments made by Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar on the issue of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC).

He said that the EBC has done a good job in preparing for the local government elections.

314 candidates have been listed to contest 137 electoral districts throughout the country.
