Child rape accused granted $150,000 bail

Trinidad Express / CONSTRUCTION worker Robert Persad was on Friday granted $150,000 bail on charges of raping and sexually touching a 16-year-old girl.

The sexual penetration and sexual touching allegedly occurred on May 11 and 13 of this year.

Persad, a mason of Tarouba near San Fernando was charged by constable Nicole St John.

At his court appearance on Thursday evening he was denied bail and remanded into custody for his criminal record to be checked.

Today he appeared before senior magistrate Cherril-Anne Antoine.

His record showed he had a previous conviction for obscene language and a pending matter for possession of marijuana but he said this was completed.

Attorney Annalee Girwar asked for bail. She said her 36-year-old client was the father of three.

Antoine placed him on $150,000 bail.

The matter was adjourned to next week Wednesday when the address of the victim is to be verified.
