Cops threaten walkout over bad conditions

Trinidad Express / Deplorable conditions at the El Socorro office of the Guard and Emergency Branch and the Traffic Unit may lead to officers walking out on the job. This was the warning given by several officers attached to the two units in speaking with Express yesterday evening. The officers indicated that they had been working in “sub-par” and “unacceptable” conditions for at least three months, with several facilities in the building failing, including the air conditioning and the sewerage system. However, things had gotten so bad, the officers claimed, that raw sewage was now seeping into several areas of the building, including the kitchen and charge room. The officers were threatening to “walk off the job” if the issues were not dealt with, noting that they had allegedly made the issues known to senior officers in the police service, as well as the managers of the building in which the units operate, yet nothing had been done. Speaking to Express yesterday, president of the Police Service Social and Welfare Association Insp Michael Seales, noted that he had been made aware of the issue yesterday, and as a result he had personally made contact with the commissioner of police and relate the issue. “I am asking the officers to give the commissioner at least seven days to treat with the issue.”
