Cuba, T&T trade ties growing says Cuban ambassador

The trinidad Guardian / Despite the American economic embargo against Cuba, T&T businesses continue to show interest in commercial ties with the island said Cuban Ambassador Guillermo Vázquez Moreno.

“We note the increase of relations between T&T and Cuba in the aspects of commerce and trade. With the increase of these bilateral relations it shows T&T’s support for Cuba. These T&T companies are against the blockade. Last year we had a large amount of companies from T&T that visited the trade fair in Cuba.”

Moreno spoke yesterday at a media conference held at the Cuban Embassy, Westmoorings.

The media conference was held to update the public on the U.S. sanctions against Cuba which have been in place since the 1960s.

T&T and Caricom have usually voted against the blockade at the United Nations every year.

Moreno said every year most countries worldwide vote in favour of the United States lifting its sanctions against Cuba and they expect the same this year in the United Nations vote in November.

He added that the United States’ economic blockade against Cuba has been very costly to the island over the years costing the country billions of dollars and increasing the cost of doing business in Cuba.

He said last year T&T’s Minister of Trade headed the T&T trade delegation to Cuba and this year there will be an even bigger contigent heading to Cuba’s top trade and business conference.

The Havana Trade Fair will be held this year from October 30 to November 7.

“I would like to express my thanks to T&T and its business people for that support. The Director of exporTT will also be attending.”

He said that both countries are working together on new projects.

“T&T has proven to be an important trade partner for Cuba in the Caribbean.”

Moreno pointed out that there are 94 Cuban health professionals working in T&T and the medical sector is another area where both countries co-operate.

He added that there are Cuban drugs that are being registered now in T&T and once they pass through the process, they will be available to the public.
