Davidson-Celestine not going up for re-election

Trinidad Express / TOBAGO   “A good leader must also know when to walk away and, although it is one of the most difficult decisions to make when that time comes, it is best to listen to your instincts.” So said Tracy Davidson-Celestine, Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Tourism Secretary and representative for Parlatuvier/L’Anse Fourmi/Speyside, who will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming THA elections, under the “Fresh Face, Fresh Start” banner of People’s National Movement (PNM) Tobago political leader Kelvin Charles. In a statement to the media on Friday, Davidson-Celestine said: “After serving the electoral district of Parlatuvier/L’Anse Fourmi/Speyside for approximately eight years, the time has come for me to take the bold, yet brave decision to step away from representational politics and begin a new and different chapter in my life. Consequently, I wish to announce that I will not seek re-election in the upcoming Tobago House of Assembly’s election.” Davidson-Celestine said she approached her duties passionately, putting her head, heart and soul into it. “Together we made great strides, and I remain truly appreciative of your confidence in me to lead the charge, whether it was in championing the construction of new fishing facilities, mini mall and community centres, or the installation of lights on every playing field and the jazz festivals. But most importantly, improving the standard of living of the residents, by restoring our economic strength. I held nothing back. My vision was always to empower the communities and transform lives and I thank all of you who made this possible over the years.” She said she has represented the people of her district and Tobago with pride as Tourism Secretary for the past four years. “I love this electoral district, our island and the country, and it has been an honour to do what only a small percentage of the population get to do—represent our people at the highest political level,” she added. “I will continue to do all I can to help it succeed as we all strive to achieve internal self-government so that our people can achieve self-determination.” She said she will give her full support in ensuring the PNM retains control of the Tobago House of Assembly in the upcoming elections, and she is working closely with the Tobago Council of the PNM to manage the transition as a new representative for the area is being sought. Davidson-Celestine expressed pleasure working with former PNM Tobago political leader and current THA Chief Secretary Orville London, as well as all the assemblymen and councillors over the years. In response, new leader Charles thanked Davidson-Celestine for her service over the years. “I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Mrs Davidson-Celestine for her work as a member of the party and as a secretary in the THA. I wish her the very best in her future endeavours. I stand ready to assist in any way that I can. May she continue to receive blessings from the Almighty,” said Charles.
