Dr Jephthah Ford Sentenced To Six Months In Prison

RJR News / Medical practitioner Dr Jephthah Ford was on Thursday morning sentenced to six months in prison, following his conviction on corruption charges.

Dr. Ford was convicted in August on two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He was charged with trying to bribe a policeman who had arrested two Surinamese men who were found in possession of $60 million in 2014.

Dr Ford offered the policeman 40 per cent of the money if he released the men with the cash. The offer was recorded on audiotape.

During Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Ford’s attorney, Bert Samuels, urged Parish Judge Simone Wolfe Reece not to send him to prison, but instead impose a fine.

He asked the judge to take into consideration Dr Ford’s years of service to the medical field. He said Dr Ford is always seeking to intervene and help, but conceded that Dr Ford made the wrong intervention in this case.

In passing judgment, Judge Wolfe Reece said the seriousness of the offence warranted a custodial sentence.

Dr. Ford has been offered bail in the sum of 1 million dollars pending his appeal.
