Drug trafficking charges for Surinamese woman held at airport

Trinidad Express / A Surinamese national appeared before an Arima Magistrate on Wednesday charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Bernadette Astrid Silvana Van Zichem was held by officers of the Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit (OCIU), at the Piarco International Airport on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old electrician of Suriname, appeared in the Arima Third Magistrates’ Court.

The matter was adjourned to Thursday.

The accused was held by officers of the OCIU, around 7:55am at the airport, as she prepared to board flight BW412 to Barbados. She was in transit from Suriname. 

A search of her suitcase allegedly resulted in 4.78 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,912,000 and 14.14 kilogrammes of high-grade marijuana, with an estimated street value of $1,267,707.
