Facebook post trouble: Sturge guilty of contempt of court

Trinidad Express / ATTORNEY Wayne Sturge has been fined $5,000 by a High Court judge after being found guilty at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain on a charge of contempt of court.

The proceedings against him arose last year after he published a post on Facebook related to a murder trial in which he was one of the defence attorneys and which had also been ongoing before a jury at the time the post was made.

Should Sturge fail to pay the fine within the next seven days, he will be sentenced to six months’ simple imprisonment.

In addition, the Disciplinary Committee of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago will also be made aware of the court’s findings and sentence.

The sentence was handed down by Justice Norton Jack on Thursday after he heard submissions from attorneys representing Sturge as well as the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). However, after sentence was passed, Sturge told members of the media he intended to appeal the conviction and sentence.
