Fire breaks out at LNG facility

The trinidad Guardian / Just over a month after a gas leak at Atlantic’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production facility forced an evacuation, safety protocols were initiated when a fire broke out at the Point Fortin plant yesterday.

According to a statement from Atlantic, the fire occurred at one of the power generation units around 2.15 pm, prompting the company’s response and safety systems to be activated.

The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries reported.

The release stated that technical teams were conducting checks.

Sources inside the plant said that the fire destroyed a turbine generator and that staff was awaiting a safety stand down to get a briefing on the incident yesterday evening.

However, operations continued as the fire was isolated to a particular area in the plant.

Atlantic is a major contributor to T&T’s Gross Domestic Product and is the sixth largest producer of LNG in the world.
