Jamaica Observer / Kemi Igbon and Garfield Igbon emerged female and male victors of the Law Enforcement Torch Run last Saturday held at the Police Officers’ Club. Igbon clocked 23.24 minutes to finish well ahead of her closest challengers Pauline Murphy, who finished with 25.29 minutes, with Allison Sutherland close behind with 25.54 minutes.
UCT Steppas’ Garfield Gordon won the men’s category in 17.23 minutes, with his teammate Jerome Kirby a mere three seconds behind, while Bejaun Jones of the Jamaica Constabulary Force rounding out the top three with a time of 19.17 minutes.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the premier avenue for fund-raising and public awareness for the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics cater to athletes who are intellectually challenged by giving them an opportunity to participate in several sporting disciplines.
Over 1,100 people participated in the run representing an increase of 69 per cent compared to last year’s staging that saw 650 people being a part of the run.
Each year almost 90,000 law enforcement officers participate in the torch run across 35 nations, raising in excess of US$46 million for local Special Olympics programmes and more than $461 million since its inception in 1981.
Since 1986 Jamaica has adopted the torch run and to date has contributed an estimated J$30 million towards preparing and sending athletes to international games.
Through the combined efforts of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, the Department of Correctional Services and the Jamaica Customs Agency, Special Olympics Jamaica will receive funds to contribute toward travel expenses for the 2019 World Summer Games.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run was sponsored by Salada Foods Jamaica, the Police Cooperative Credit Union, GraceKennedy Limited, Lasco, Cals Manufacturing, Dolphin Cove, National Security Employees’ Cooperative, the National Solid Waste Management Authority, St John Ambulance, the Ministry of Health, Ardenne High, Priory Trust and 432 Body Works.
