Gov't pulling out all the stops to combat crime ? Montague

Jamaica Gleaner / National Security Minister Robert Montague says Government is pulling out all the stops in combating crime.

He made the statement on Friday at the graduation ceremony for 173 new recruits of the Jamaica Constabulary Force at the National Police College in St Catherine.

A day earlier, the Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Peter Bunting, called for Prime Minister Andrew Holness to sack Montague as murders continued to increase under his watch.

Montague hit back at the criticisms, saying the Government has been working to address the problem which he said have been built up over many decades.

He argued that there can be no social and economic growth in Jamaica without a reduction in crime.

Montague also said overcoming the crime problem will require unity and strength, discipline, dedication and partnership.

There’s been an increase in the number of murders in recent weeks.

Bunting has argued that 55 murders were recorded in a single week this month, the highest in any one week period since 2010.
