Gov't warned against stymieing social outreach with tobacco bill

Jamaica Gleaner / Managing Director of tobacco company Carreras Limited Marcus Steele says the Government should tread carefully in its plans to introduce new tobacco legislation so as to avoid undermining the social outreach of the company and other players in the industry.

Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton had indicated that a comprehensive Tobacco Control Bill has been developed and is under review.

Among other things, the proposed law would impose a prohibition on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.

Speaking at a Carreras scholarship award function, Steele said such legislation will threaten the company’s ability to be socially responsible and stymie its nation-building efforts.

He argued that the government should take a balanced approach on the matter.
