GRAND PRIX FIREWORKS*

Trinidad Express / CHEERED on by their adoring home fans all the way, Trinidad and Tobago’s women produced their biggest victory ever in the sport of volleyball Friday night at the National Cycling Centre, Couva. The six-time Caribbean champions bounced back in tremendous fashion to claim their first triumph from their fourth attempt in the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) World Grand Prix. After failing to win a set against the very Australian squad in the third and final match of their first Group Three pool in Mexico last Sunday night, it seemed like the story would play out in the same fashion when the hosts surrendered the first set tamely (25-16) in their first match of the second pool. But some awesome power serving by top striker Channon Thompson at the start of the second gave her teammates the surge of adrenalin they needed and the turnaround was so dramatic that the Australians never looked like getting back on level terms. T&T, playing in their tournament on the FIVB tour, produced three of the best sets they have ever played as they combined attack and defence remarkably to prevail 25-16, 26-24, 25-17 in 103 minutes.
