‘Guardian’ sends home 6 *

Trinidad Express / THE Trinidad Guardian has sent home a number of freelance sub-editors, as it rolls out a new newspaper planning and design software.

Six employees of the St Vincent Street, Port of Spain-based Guardian’s sub-editing department have received notices so far, and this figure is expected to increase over the next few weeks, the Express was informed.

Some of the affected employees have been given December 6 as their last working day.

Since they are not permanent workers, they are not entitled to severance benefits.

The Express was told that since the implementation of the new software, several parts of the newspaper’s layout/design process have now become automated, resulting in some positions becoming redundant.
