The trinidad Guardian / There are numerous benefits for companies hosting free health and wellness fairs for its employees. Such events provide an ideal setting to bring staff together to explore new avenues toward health while partnering with local organisations and businesses to promote unique resources. In addition, the fair presents an opportunity to bring qualified healthcare professionals directly to employees who may otherwise be unaware of their current health status.
A release said this rang true for Derek Mitchell, a field marketing rep at IGT (formerly GTECH) who has participated in IGT’s Health and Wellness Fair since its inception seven years ago.
Mitchell spoke enthusiastically of his commitment to attend each year. He stated, “The Company offers this incentive to the staff at no cost, and who wouldn’t want to take advantage of this great opportunity especially, as health care is very costly these days.” He continued, “at my age, I am very concerned with the status of my health; this is why I attend annually.”
It was during a visit to the North West Regional Health Authority’s (NWRHA) booth that he learnt of his high cholesterol level, having taken the blood test.
Upon learning this, Mitchell made significant changes to his eating habits and exercises regularly. “It has made me more conscious of the effects of my lifestyle and eating habits.”
Cholesterol tests are conducted at the NWRHA Basic Health Screening booths where attendees are required to register. Upon registration participants are presented with a Wellness Passport, which allows them to partake in other tests available, such as blood pressure and blood sugar testing, cognitive function assessments, and calculation of an individual’s Body Mass Index (BMI).
The NWRHA also provides screening for early detection of prostate cancer through Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests. This booth offers information about the importance of the PSA tests for all men.
Other participating vendors at the 2017 event included those in related fields that could impact the life of an employee, such as stress and financial issues.
Eastern Credit Union marketing representatives were on hand and eagerly engaged the attendees providing information on their products and services, while Scotiabank representatives from the Bank at Work Unit offered the convenience of banking at work.
Digicel Play showcased the many packages available and b-mobile representatives discussed their frontline services. Courts Optical offered free vision screening test whilst Glorious Bodies massage therapists provided soothing neck massages.
Customer care representatives from Livet Wellness Centre & Holistic Spa, gave information about the many services available for persons with diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and renal failure. The Buttered Up booth showcased its many organic body products, and sales representatives on The Plant People Limited stall, provided an abundance of useful information on the benefits house plants.
Commenting on this year’s Health and Wellness Fair, Roger Bolai, IGT’s Country Manager, stated “We are all too often consumed in our busy lives, that we easily ignore the one thing that is critical to life, our health.” Bolai continued, “IGT values the importance of the physical, emotional and financial well-being of its employees. This is one of the main reasons IGT hosts the annual fair, with a holistic approach. We look at this as an opportunity for employees to come together whilst gaining advanced information about their health, as others seek financial advice.”
This annual fair occurs at IGT’s head office in Port-of-Spain. To expand the reach of this interactive and meaningful event, invitations were also extended to the staff of the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB), and employees from neighbouring companies, IBM and the Pan American Life Insurance-Group Business.
