Jamaica condemns slave trading in Libya

Jamaica Gleaner / The Jamaican government has condemned what it says is the human indignity of slave trading now taking place in Libya.

A video of men appearing to be sold at an auction in Libya for US$400 has shocked the world and focused international attention on the exploitation of migrants and refugees in the north African country.

Libya is the main transit point for refugees and migrants trying to reach Europe by sea.

Yesterday, the leaders of Libya, France, Germany, Chad, Niger and four other countries agreed on a plan to evacuate thousands of migrants stuck in Libyan detention camps.

This morning, minister of foreign affairs, Kamina Johnson Smith, told the Senate that the occurrences in Libya are unreservedly condemned by the Government of Jamaica.
