Todo se remonta a 2003, cuando Diamantis decidió acercarse al registro civil de su distrito, Egáleo, en el noroeste de Atenas, para votar en las siguientes elecciones legislativas. En la mesa de sufragio, el ciudadano fue informado que no figuraba en el registro electoral , por una sorpresiva razón: había sido borrado tras reportarse su fallecimiento.
Para su mala fortuna, otra persona con el mismo nombre había fallecido .

Pero eso no era todo: los padres de ambos también tenían nombres idénticos y solo la fecha de nacimiento los diferenciaba , dato que las autoridades pasaron por alto.
Tras constatar el error, el hombre se dirigió al registro central de Atenas, donde un abogado le recomendó que apelara a la justicia.

Ello tampoco dio resultado, ya que los jueces rechazaron su petición arguyendo que debía ser el finado -o, ante su obvia imposibilidad, sus familiares-, y no él mismo, quien pusiera el recurso.

(Reuters) Desesperada, la pareja contaba en la cadena privada ANT1 que los funcionarios llegaron a preguntarle a la mujer: “¿Está usted segura de que su marido sigue vivo?” .
Los problemas para Diamantís se han acumulado durante estos años, en los que ha gastado miles de euros en abogados , más allá de no poder votar en las elecciones.
Al no poder aceptar a tiempo la herencia de su padre , este sí fallecido en 2015, Diamantis recibirá además una multa por el retraso cuando finalmente todo se solucione.
Además, su hijo no está cubierto por su seguro médico desde 2003 , a pesar de que él paga sus impuestos, pues para la Hacienda griega si él está declarado vivo o muerto es irrelevante, pues ha aceptado todas sus declaraciones anuales.
Eso sí, ni la familia recibe ayudas del Estado al estar Diamantis en un limbo legal, ni su mujer puede recibir la pensión de viudez que le correspondería por el supuesto fallecimiento de su marido.
La carta de los medios parece comenzado bien para este hombre: un abogado presente en la tertulia televisiva en la que participó se ha ofrecido a representarlo gratuitamente.
