The trinidad Guardian / RIO DE JANEIRO-The main ramp of Marina da Gloria, the sailing venue of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, partially collapsed yesterday. No one was injured, organisers said, in the incident that raises further questions about the quality of construction in the Olympic host city.
Philip Wilkinson, a spokesman for the Rio 2016 organising committee, placed the blame on high tides and a stormy sea.
The collapsed structure, which is temporary, is the main access point for boats to reach the water.
Wilkinson also said the construction company responsible for the project has been contacted and is expected to make the repairs within four days.
Sailing competitions begin August 8. Training will not be affected as the boats can use the permanent ramp to the side of the damaged structure, the Rio 2016’s spokesman said.
World Sailing said in a statement that it is following closely the efforts to fix the ramp.
In another incident caused by strong winds in Rio, water inundated TV studios on Copacabana Beach near the volleyball arena. Iron boards were used to contain the waves.
Rio’s construction standards have been under heavy criticism since April, when a new, elevated bike path that was heralded as a top legacy project of the Rio Olympics collapsed, killing two people.
Yesterday a much-delayed subway extension was inaugurated. It will open tomorrow to link the Ipanema and Copacabana beach areas to the western suburb of Barra da Tijuca, site of the Olympic Park. The line will be available only to event ticket holders, athletes and media covering the games.
First horses arrive
The first 34 horses that will take part in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics have arrived in Brazil.
The International Federation of Equestrian Sports says all the horses arrived yesterday morning aboard a Boeing 777 belonging to Emirates SkyCargo.
They are now settled at the Olympic Equestrian Center that will host the sport’s three disciplines-eventing, jumping and dressage.
The federation says it was the first of nine such flights with horses coming from Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Japan, Italy and China.
More than 200 horses from 43 nations will be arriving at the equestrian centre in the Deodoro Olympic Park over the next few weeks.
Bryan brothers withdraw from Games
Bob and Mike Bryan will not defend their Olympic doubles title in Rio, citing health concerns.
The twins announced their withdrawal on their Facebook page yesterday, saying that as “husbands and fathers, our family’s health is now our top priority.”
They didn’t mention the Zika virus, which has been linked to birth defects.
The Bryans won gold at the 2012 London Games.
The Americans are the No 2 doubles team and have won 16 Grand Slam title, a men’s record.
Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey also are skipping the Rio Olympics, citing scheduling issues.
Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic, Tomas Berdych and Simona Halep are among those withdrawing from Rio because of Zika.
Injury forces South Korean gymnast out
SEOUL-South Korean gymnast Lee Go-im will miss next month’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after fracturing her left arm during training at an Olympic venue.
The Korean Olympic Committee said the 15-year-old suffered the injury while practicing her vault routine at the Athlete’s Park in Rio de Janeiro Thursday evening, and is scheduled to return to South Korea for surgery.
The high-school athlete had been the youngest South Korean to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Games.
Lee Eun-ju, who finished second in last month’s national trials, will take her spot in the Olympic artistic gymnastics competition, the KOC said. (AP)
