Major changes planned for Festival Song competition return

Jamaica Gleaner / The Festival Song competition is to return next year with major changes.

As part of the changes, Minister of Culture Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange says the competition will offer a record $10 million in cash and prizes.

Grange says there will also be major changes to the format and presentation of the oldest song competition in Jamaica as well as improvements in the quality of the entries.

The festival song competition, which forms part of the nation’s Independence celebrations, was aborted last year because of concerns about the poor quality of the entries that were received.

However, Grange says among the activities that will take place in the lead up to the finals of the competition is a series of developmental workshops across the country to address writing, publishing as well as intellectual and property rights.

She says Jamaicans overseas will have an opportunity to help select the winner.
