Mayor vs Police…as cops try to end las lap in Sando

Trinidad Express / San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello challenged police officers who attempted to shut down Carnival celebrations in the city on Tuesday night.

Regrello, manager of Caribbean Airlines Skiffle Bunch Steel Orchestra, was on board a float making its way towards the panyard on Cipero Street when the police intervened at around 10pm.

The band which placed second in the finals of the National Panorama competition 2018 was entertaining a large crowd that lined the streets.

Senior officers noted that a decision was taken to close off the celebration due to violence in the city.

But Regrello pleaded with the officers to allow his band to complete its session which was being enjoyed by the public.

The police declined and members of the public began shouting at the officers….“That is the Mayor, have some respect for him”.

Regrello jumped off the float and challenged the officers. He noted that the players were simply entertaining the crowd in the spirit of Carnival.

Following a brief telephone conversation, Regrello said he had received permission to continue playing the music.

The officers backed off but remained at the venue until the crowds dispersed.

Regrello said he was in discussion with his attorney and would comment on the incident at a press conference later today.
