Mohammed claims U-21 title

The trinidad Guardian / Nabeel Mohammed was yesterday awaiting the permission of the weather conditions to determine his fate in the Boys Singles Under-21 division of the Sagicor Junior Tennis Championship at the Country Club Maraval.

He was scheduled to face Keshan Moonasar to secure the title in the u-21 round robin play-off late yesterday, but after persistent rains match officials were hoping for the rain to stop to dry the courts and resume action.

Mohammed, considered one of the country’s top rising stars, having won multiple titles in all categories for various tournaments so far, positioned himself for additional silverware by beating his closest rival Aidan Carter in an early match yesterday in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Carter who has dominated the local junior tennis circuit has had an unblemished record in the play-off, beating Moonasar, Samuel West and Brandon Gregoire, before being stopped by Mohammed under stormy skies.

Since his loss however, Mohammed has made amends, beating Gregoire and Carter by impressive scores that would give him the edge in a head-to-head finish with Carter, should he beat Moonasar in his last match. West in another game eeked out a hard-fought 7-6(5), 6-0 triumph over Gregoire.

Yin Lee Assang also signalled intentions of copping the Women’s u-18 crown by clobbering Jade Tom Yew 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 in the semifinal, while the Boys u-16 title was sewed up by Elijah Leslie who prevailed over Andre Crawford 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
