Jamaica Gleaner / Jamaica senior netball team captain Jhaniele Fowler-Reid has said that the side is highly motivated and confident ahead of this year’s Fast5 Netball World Series, which will be held in Melbourne, Australia from October 28 to 29.
The Sunshine Girls finished fifth in last year’s tournament, which was also held in Australia, but Fowler-Reid said the girls are determined to produce a good showing this time around.
“We are pretty confident because my teammates and I have been discussing how much we want to win it and how much we have never won it before. The hunger and drive that we have is just pushing us to getting that first place,” said Fowler-Reid.
“There is not much pressure because I feel that we are going there as the underdogs, as we have not medalled in the previous years and I feel like persons are thinking that we are walkovers. We are taking on that on board, and we are just using that as our motivation,” she said.
Fowler-Reid added: “The training was really good and we had a lot of match plays that were very crucial in us in getting prepared to go down there and dominate.”
Fowler-Reid, who will be playing in the tournament for the first time in two years, is also hoping to lead the Sunshine Girls unit to a podium finish at the championships.
EXPECTED TO DO WELL
“I am very excited, but I know that it is going to be really hard because I haven’t played Fast5 in a while, but I know that it is shooting and it is netball, and I love netball, so I know, I will do well, and my teammates will do well,” Fowler-Reid said.
“Not much is expected of us and somewhat that is good, and that is not so good, but we are using that to motivate us,” she continued.
The Sunshine Girls squad, which left the island yesterday for the championships, also includes the experienced pair of Malysha Kelly and Paula Thompson.
It also includes newcomer Shimona Nelson, who is a member of the Jamaica Under-21 team that participated in this year’s World Youth Championships in Botswana. The other members of the squad are Stacian Facey, Vangelee Williams, Shanice Beckford, Rebekah Robinson, Adean Thomas, and Khadijah Williams.
The Jamaicans start their campaign against South Africa on Saturday and will also face Australia and Malawi on the same day.
