Not-too-merry so far*


Trinidad Express / WITH less than a month to go before Christmas, businesses are reporting a not-too-merry or bright season so far. Shoppers would have already begun purchasing gifts and household items and even making downpayments on furniture and appliances in the weeks before Christmas. But this year consumers seem to be holding back on spending, business groups told Express Business last week. They have attributed the “muted” and “poor” sales to decreased consumer confidence, increased unemployment and a wait-and-see approach of some consumers who are yet to receive their annual bonuses. Will sales will pick up? San Juan Business Association president Vivek Charran said he hopes sales will pick up by the end of this month and into December.
