Nurse murdered in Tobago: relative held

Trinidad Express /

A male relative was in police custody yesterday after Tobago recorded a third murder for the year.

Dead is mother of one Crystal Tobias-Busby, 29, of King Street, Plymouth, Tobago. She was a midwife at Scarborough General Hospital.

Tobias-Busby was stabbed repeatedly in her chest, leg and stomach by a close male relative who fled the scene, but was picked up by police at his Canaan home. Charges are to be laid against him.

Agartha Tobias, grandmother of the deceased, said she observed when the suspect ran from the house.

Still in shock, Tobias was seated in the porch among the blood-stained furniture where the murder took place.

“All I do, I know when he run out and then after Crystal come out, she sit down here…why I out here so, the blood,” she said.

The woman’s son, two-year-old Khalel, was playing with his toy truck in the street, oblivious to what happened to his mother.

Relatives said Tobias-Busby was separated from her husband and a restraining order was taken out against him, while both were in a custody battle over their son in the Scarborough Magistrates’ Court.

The couple would have celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary yesterday.

According to Tobago police, the incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. The suspect broke into the woman’s home through the back door and stabbed her several times as she lay asleep next to her son. She died at hospital.

A concerned neighbour and adopted mother of the deceased, Leiba Matthews-Julien, said she was alerted to the commotion and ran to assist.

“So I ran up the street, I came and I saw her sitting on a chair in the corner of the porch, just drenched in blood. She was in and out of consciousness as there were five major wounds,” she said.

Matthews-Julien said the battered woman was estranged following years of domestic abuse.

She said Tobias-Busby relocated to her mother’s home after there were two mysterious fires at her rented apartment at Signal Hill and she was allegedly poisoned.

Tobago police have confirmed numerous reports were made at Old Grange Police Station by the midife.

Tobago House of Assembly Health Secretary Claudia Groome-Duke visited the family and offered condolences.

Insp Kirk of the Scarborough Homicide Bureau is spearheading investigations.
