Official Election Count Underway

RJR News / The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People’s National Party (PNP) are closely monitoring the official count of ballots from the Local Government election.     The final counting began at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and is expected to last two days.     Special attention is being placed on St. Catherine and St. Thomas.     Director of Elections Orrette Fisher, said preliminary results show that St. Thomas remains tied with five divisions going to each party. He explained how it would be settled if the tie remains. “When the Returning Officer completes the recount, if everything remains the same and it’s five-five, then the Returning Officer has the casting vote. But he is mandated to cast it for the party with the popular vote in the parish…and then the deputy mayor would come from the opposition,” he declared.   Instructions have been given to extend the counting into the night if the need arises. Meanwhile, Mr. Fisher said the final count will also determine the outcome of  the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation. The result in the Edgewater division is being contested, while the Angels division is tied.
